The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of the Department of Homeland Security is in immediate need of workers to help canvass areas in NYC affected by Hurricane Sandy. Job Description:

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of the Department of Homeland Security has immediate openings for 300 temporary positions in all 5 boroughs of New York City. Candidates will work on foot in affected localities and communicate with persons affected by the Hurricane Sandy disaster to identify their disaster related needs and offer information on what assistance is available and how to obtain it. Candidates should possess strong computer, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills. Candidates who are bi-lingual are strongly preferred. Wage is $13-$15 per hour plus overtime pay. Hours are 7 AM to 7 PM, 7 days per week. Must be eighteen years of age and a US Citizen or legally able to work in the US. A background check will be performed. FEMA is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Volunteering and Donation Opportunities Through NYC.GOV

From NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs:

  • Stay tuned for info about shuttle buses to project sites in disaster-affected areas. These dates/times will be released as they become available.
  • Volunteer on an ongoing basis with Red Hook Initiative, NYC Coalition Against Hunger, UJA Federation, OEM, P.S. 84, St. Virgilius Church, American Legion Hall, etc. in impacted areas.
  • Ongoing Parks & Recreation clean ups
  • Donate food to City Harvest, Food Bank NYC, and Met Council.
  • Donate materials to Salvation Army, Housing Works, and Catholic Charities.
  • Donate cash to www.nyc.gov/fund. 100% of donations will go to relief efforts

Volunteer Drivers for Delivery of Donations in Queens

As you know, many parts of Queens suffered tremendous devastation from Hurricane Sandy. Currently, the Queens Delegation of the City Council is collecting donations to help individuals and families in the hardest hit areas, like Broad Channel and the Rockaways.

Starting Friday Nov. 8th, volunteers are needed to transport donations to The Rock Church (57-02 Hoffman Drive Elmhurst, NY 11373; corner of Queens Blvd and 57th Avenue, across the Queens Center Mall). Volunteers are needed for Saturday from 9 am to noon to sort through the donations. Drivers are needed in the afternoon to get the donations to various sites throughout the borough.
